This page explains how to get to Göbekli Tepe from Istanbul and from anywhere else in Turkey. The site stands near Örencik village in Şanlıurfa Province, about 15 to 18 km from the city centre depending on the source, so every route ends with a short drive from Şanlıurfa. You will find the flights to Şanlıurfa GAP Airport (GNY), the airport transfer into town, the long-distance buses, the city bus and taxi options for the last few kilometres, the shuttle from the visitor centre, the honest answer on Istanbul day trips and the travel advice and visa rules. If you would rather let someone handle the driving, the Göbekli Tepe tours compared on this site cover the transport for you.

Quick answer Getting there at a glance

The fastest way to get to Göbekli Tepe is a direct flight from Istanbul to Şanlıurfa GAP Airport (GNY), about 1 h 49 min in the air, then a 20-minute drive to the site near Örencik village. The nearest big city base is Şanlıurfa, roughly 15-18 km from the hill.

Key takeaways

Flying to Şanlıurfa

Flying is how almost every visitor from Istanbul arrives, and it is the only way a same-day return works.

The Airport

Şanlıurfa GAP Airport has the IATA code GNY. It sits in Karaköprü about 33.9 km northeast of Şanlıurfa city centre, which Wikipedia's city article rounds to about 34 km. The airport opened in 2007, replacing the old Şanlıurfa Airport about 9 km south of the city. Wikipedia's own article disagrees on the opening day, giving 16 July in the infobox and 17 June in the text. The runway is 4,000 m and the airport handled 1,059,953 passengers, up from 641,580 in 2022. Capacity is 2,000,000 passengers a year.

One practical point: Wikipedia notes that most facilities, including the taxi rank, are staffed only when flights are due. Time your arrival transfer accordingly.

From GNY, Turkish Airlines flies to Istanbul Airport, AJet to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen and Ankara Esenboğa, Pegasus to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen and Izmir, and SunExpress to Antalya and Izmir.

Flight times from Istanbul run roughly 1 h 41 min to 1 h 55 min, with a Skyscanner average of 1 h 49 min. Turkish Airlines, AJet, Pegasus and Flynas operate the route per Skyscanner. Two aggregators disagree on weekly frequency, one counting 26 departures and another 21, so treat it as several flights a week and check schedules.

From the Airport to the City and to the Site

Havaş operates shuttle buses from the airport to the Şanlıurfa city centre and to Siverek. Taxi fares from the airport into town are negotiable, so agree the fare before you get in.

For the site itself, Flypgs puts the airport about 36 km from Göbekli Tepe, while My Turkey Adventure describes the site as roughly a 20-minute drive from the airport. A rental car or a pre-arranged transfer covers that leg. If you take a Şanlıurfa day tour instead, the Göbekli Tepe Private Tour from Şanlıurfa at $449 per person meets you in front of the El Ruha Hotel in Şanlıurfa and covers the transport from there.

By Bus or Car

Road travel works if you are combining Şanlıurfa with Gaziantep, Mardin or Adıyaman, and it is the budget route from Istanbul if you have days to spare.

Long-Distance Buses from Istanbul

The Istanbul to Şanlıurfa run is long. Bookaway lists 948 km by road with bus durations of 19 to 23 hours, averaging 20 to 21 hours, and fares of US$50 to US$53, with departures from 00:30 to 23:30. Chasing the Donkey, updated more recently, says 15 to 17 hours depending on stops. The two sources do not agree, so plan for somewhere between 15 and 23 hours and treat the train as unavailable: Şanlıurfa has no train station, and the nearest stations are in Gaziantep or Adana. Hürriyet's older guide put the trip at about 19 hours, which fits the same picture.

Overnight buses arrive in Şanlıurfa, from where a taxi or the city bus takes you toward the site. Sleeping flat for that many hours before a day of walking in the heat is not for everyone, which is why this page points to the plane for most trips.

From Gaziantep, Adıyaman and Mardin

Gaziantep is the common eastern approach. Urfanatik gives Şanlıurfa to Gaziantep as about 150 km by road, though the same article also mentions about 120 km in one place, with the bus at 2 h 20 min to 2 h 30 min and a private car at 1 h 45 min. Gaziantep Airport (GZT) is 20 km from that city, has a 3,000 m runway and handled 3,068,220 passengers, so flying into Gaziantep and busing to Urfa is a real alternative.

Adıyaman Airport (ADF) has a 2,500 m runway and is served by AJet, Pegasus and Turkish Airlines, with 388,260 passengers. From Mardin, the road is about 185 km, 2 to 2.5 hours by car, or about 3 hours by bus per Beyond Wild Places. Multi-day routes that link these cities exist, such as the Göbekli Tepe and Mount Nemrut 3 Days, which starts and ends in Şanlıurfa with no flights.

Car Hire

A hired car gives you the most control, because the site is a short drive from the city and Karahan Tepe lies roughly 40 to 60 km away by road depending on the route you take. Distances in the region are modest: Gaziantep about 150 km, Mardin about 185 km, and the Harran plain about 65 km from Göbekli Tepe per Hürriyet. Drive early in summer, because the mean daily maximum in Şanlıurfa reaches 39.5 °C in July and the record high is 46.8 °C.

From Şanlıurfa to the Hill

However you reach Şanlıurfa, the site itself is a short hop from town, and the sources disagree on exactly how short.

How Far Is It

The distance depends on who you ask. Wikipedia's Şanlıurfa article and Beyond Wild Places put Göbekli Tepe about 12 km northeast of the city. My Turkey Adventure and Nomadic Niko say about 15 km.

CNN Türk and Flypgs say 18 km, and Hürriyet's older guide says 20 km. A fair summary is 12 to 18 km from the city centre, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car.

The City Bus

Public buses run from Şanlıurfa to the site, but the schedules on record differ. Flypgs says municipal bus 100 leaves the Abide stop at 10:00 and 16:00 and returns from Göbekli Tepe at 12:00 and 18:00. Backpack Moments describes buses leaving opposite the small regional bus station at 10:00, 13:00 and 16:00, returning at 12:00, 15:00 and 17:30, with the ride about 30 minutes in theory and 45 in practice. Nomadic Niko, in the most recent account, says buses leave the Şanlıurfa Museum hourly from 8:45 to 16:45 and return hourly from 10:00 to 18:00.

On fares, Nomadic Niko gives one way at 30₺ with an Urfakart or 38₺ contactless, and a reader comment on Backpack Moments confirms 38 lira contactless. Check the timetable locally on the day, because the accounts above were written at different times.

Taxi

A taxi from the city centre is the simple option for the 12 to 18 km ride. Fares are negotiable, so agree the price and whether the driver waits before setting off, since the return bus may not fit your schedule.

The Road and the Shuttle

The site lies near Örencik village in the Taş Tepeler. At the visitor centre, about 1 km from the excavation area, a shuttle bus takes visitors up the final kilometre. Per the DAI Tepe Telegrams page the shuttle is included in the entrance price, and Nomadic Niko describes the free air-conditioned shuttles as a ride of a few minutes. Backpack Moments adds that a shaded tunnel runs 200 m from the museum to the shuttle stand, and that walking the roughly 1 km is also possible. From the shuttle drop-off, Sailing Stone Travel counts about a 10 to 15 minute walk to the main dome, with the enclosures viewed from an elevated circular walkway.

Entry prices for foreigners sit at about 20 to 22 EUR per the sources tracked on the Göbekli Tepe tickets page, so check there before you travel.

Can You Do It in a Day from Istanbul

Yes, by plane, and only by plane. Several catalog tours make the round trip in one long day.

The Timing

The flight takes about 1 h 49 min each way. The Göbekli Tepe Day Trip by Plane picks you up between 4:00 and 6:00 AM, and another listing says pickup by 4:15 AM. Each flies to GNY, tours the site and the city, and flies back the same evening. One operator's suggestion on a listed tour is TK 2246 at 6:25 AM out and TK 2243 at 8:15 PM back. Count on a 13 to 18 hour day door to door. The bus, at 15 to 23 hours each way, cannot work as a day trip, and there is no train.

Flying yourself is also possible, but the flights, the airport transfer, the taxi to the site and the entry ticket all need arranging, and the flight plus the roughly 20-22 EUR ticket plus meals is a real total. That is why many visitors compare the packaged day trips first.

The Catalog Day Trips

The table below compares the day trips from Istanbul in the catalog. Prices are per person and come from the tour listings. What the flights cover matters: four of the five include the Istanbul return flights and one includes them only in the Full Package option.

Which One Fits

If you want the simplest bookable day, the Göbekli Tepe Day Trip with Flights at $674 per person is private, includes the Istanbul return flights, entry tickets, transfers and food, and carries a 4.6 rating from 14 reviews. If you also want Karahan Tepe in the same day, the Göbekli Tepe and Karahan Tepe Private Day at $1,300 per person adds the second site, though lunch is an extra and all sales are final. Budget readers should note the cheap-looking Göbekli Tepe and Harran Day Trip at $225: the price covers the Şanlıurfa day only, and the flights appear only if you pick the Full Package.

One caution on the day-trip format. These are long days, and the $1,300 listing is non-refundable and neither Karahan Tepe listing includes meals, so read the inclusions on the tour pages before paying.

Travel Advice and Visas

Şanlıurfa Province sits near the Syrian border, so check the official advice and the entry rules before you book.

Official Travel Advice

The British FCDO states: "FCDO advises against all travel to within 10km of the border with Syria due to fighting and a heightened risk of terrorism." Read the advice in full, because FCDO also says in-person consular support is severely limited in areas where it advises against travel.

If you hold an American passport, read the US State Department advisory on travel.state.gov before booking. Beyond security, the practical risk is heat. Summer temperatures at the site regularly soar above 40 °C per My Turkey Adventure, Ceylanpınar in this province recorded 47.7 °C on the day Turkey's national record of 50.5 °C fell, and the mean July maximum in Şanlıurfa is 39.5 °C. Spring and autumn are the comfortable seasons.

Visas and Entry

British citizens may visit Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism, provided the passport is valid at least 150 days after arrival and has one blank page, per the FCDO entry requirements. Other nationalities should check their own foreign ministry. Money rules to know at the border: there is no limit on foreign currency taken into Turkey, but taking out lira worth more than 5,000 US dollars is not allowed.
